Gender Inclusive Housing for First Year Students

Virginia Commonwealth University Residential Life & Housing acknowledges and respects the diversity of our student population. In doing so, we offer living options to encompass all individuals. Gender Inclusive Housing is a living option within VCU residential communities which allows students to live together without regard to gender. Gender Inclusive Housing is a voluntary choice; no student will be assigned to a Gender Inclusive unit unless they have requested to be a part of a Gender Inclusive living space.

Eligibility
To reside within Gender Inclusive Housing units residents must be:

  • 18 years of age at the time of the request
  • Eligible for University housing
  • Must apply with one preferred roommate who also wants to reside in Gender Inclusive housing.

Each participant will need to have completed the current Housing Application as well as the Gender Inclusive Housing Supplement.

Gender Inclusive Roommate Requests
First-year students applicants who are interested in Gender Inclusive housing must identify one roommate who is also interested in Gender Inclusive Housing.  Both students must mutually request each other as roommates and both students must complete the Gender Inclusive application supplement.

There are multiple ways to search for roommates within our application portal.  As you progress through the application, instructions are present which allow you to seek potential roommates from the pool of other incoming first year students who may also be interested in Gender Inclusive housing.

Assignment into a Gender Inclusive space will be dependent on availability. Submitting a request for Gender Inclusive housing does not guarantee a placement will be available. If you apply for Gender Inclusive housing and we are unable to accommodate your request, you will be assigned by the gender designated in the information you provided when applying to the university.

Important Deadlines
The Gender Inclusive Housing Contract Supplement is due by June 20, 2018.
