Move-in Tips

Make a Packing List
Most students bring way more than they need to campus. Instead of thinking, "What are all the things I need for the next year?" Think about, "What are the items I need for the next four months?" Thanksgiving Break will be here before you know it, and you can swap out items when you go home.

Label All Items
Be sure to label all of your items with name, room number, and contents to ensure that nothing is misplaced and items are easily located when unpacking. The VCU Police Department would like to remind you that larceny is the most reported crime on campus - please do not leave items unattended at any time.

Don't Buy A Microwave and Fridge. Rent A Microfridge.
Fridges and microwaves are heavy and bulky. Many families struggle moving them into residence halls. VCU has a partnership with Melvin Corp, allowing students to rent a Microfridge, a microwave and fridge combo. The best part of renting a Microfridge is that it will be delivered to your room before you move-in, which means no struggling moving big bulky items through a residence hall. To rent a Microfridge, visit mymicrofridge.com.

*Only one mini-fridge/microfridge is allowed per room. Gladding Residence Center and The Honors College rooms have a provided Mini-fridge/Microwave. Apartments (Ackell, Broad & Belvidere, GRC 3, Grace & Broad, West Grace North, and West Grace South) have full sized fridges in their units, so microfridges may not be rented for these spaces on campus.

Bring Your VCU ID
Residents should bring their VCUCard to check-in to gain entry into the residence hall. They must have their VCUCard or a valid state ID to complete their check-in process. If a resident does not have their VCUCard, then they should pick-up their VCUCard prior to their move-in time slot. The VCUCard Office is open by appointment only, for more information please visit vcucard.vcu.edu/services/vcucard/get. For questions about the VCUCard, please contact vcucard@vcu.edu

Bring A Cart
Residents should bring a cart, dolly or hand truck to assist with their move-in. Residential Life and Housing will have limited carts available for use.

Stay Hydrated
Move-in can be a very hot process. Please make sure that you and your guests are drinking lots of water.

Do Not Bring Pets
We all love our pets. But bringing them to move-in, especially when you are limited to a 3-hour time slot, is not a good idea. Say goodbye to your pets at home. They will enjoy an air conditioned goodbye more than a hot sidewalk one. Pets are not allowed in the residence halls.

Read Your VCU Email
Move-in information such as instructions to sign-up for a move-in time slot and parking information will be sent to residents’ VCU emails. Make sure to check your VCU email and thoroughly read all emails from vcuhousing@vcu.edu
