How to have a successful move-in

Follow VCUPD and volunteer instructions to pull up near Rhoads Hall and unload your vehicle

The student must go and check into Rhoads Hall by themselves

  • Check-in is located in the Brandt Hall Community Room
  • Student must have their VCUID or valid state ID to complete check-in
  • Student will be given room key and mailbox key, and Room Condition Report

Vehicles cannot stay on the street; they must be moved to a long term parking deck once unloaded (see below)

The driver of the vehicle must stay in the vehicle and move the vehicle after unloading, while another person stays with belongings. If not enough guests are present, wait with belongings on sidewalk until a volunteer arrives to stay with belongings while driver moves the vehicle

How to unload:

  • Unload on the left side of Franklin Street (Follow the purple signage and balloons)
  • Keep your belongings contained as much as possible to a small area of the sidewalk. Keep belongings closer to the street and don’t block the main path of travel.
  • Volunteers will be stationed along the street to stay with belongings and begin to move them to your student’s room.
  • If weather is poor, covering your belongings in a plastic sheet will help keep them dry.

The vehicle can be parked in the following parking decks:

  • Henry Street Parking Deck (200 N Henry St, Richmond, VA 23220)
  • If full, Laurel Street Parking Deck (805 W Grace St, Richmond, VA 23220)
  • Can remain parked in long-term parking for 5 hours

Carts: Once your belongings are unloaded and car is parked in long-term parking, students or their guests can check out a cart to wheel belongings to the student’s room. The borrower must provide a photo ID in order to secure a cart. Carts are available for one hour and must be returned once belongings are unloaded. Photo ID will be returned upon cart return. Expect to wait for a cart for up to an hour.

Elevator line expectations: There are three elevators in Rhoads Hall. The elevator line can extend very far and wait times can be an hour or more at certain times during the day. We recommend using the stairs when possible. You will need to wait in the elevator line each time you plan to use the elevator. Know your student’s room number, in case you are split up in separate elevators. Staff will direct you once you reach the elevators, they may ask you to wait or give you specific instructions on how to fill the elevator.

In case of medical emergency, VCUPD Officers or any staff member in a polo can help.

Questions? Refer to Residential Life and Housing staff in black or grey polo.

Parking and Unloading

On Sunday, Aug. 11 and Saturday, Aug. 17, all unloading for Move-in will take place on Franklin Street, Pine Street, and the EE parking lot.

Volunteers* will be available to help unload vehicles and to answer questions. You should stop and unload in the unloading zone designated for your residence hall, which will be color-coded on the Parking and Unloading Map. After you unload your vehicle, you will be directed to the Henry Street Parking Deck for long-term parking (maximum 5 hours).

*Move-In Volunteers are volunteers, not paid employees, and are intended to be an extra set of hands, not professional movers. Use volunteers at your own risk.
