Gender Inclusive Housing for Returning Students
Virginia Commonwealth University Residential Life and Housing acknowledges and respects the diversity of our student population. In doing so, we offer living options to encompass all individuals. Gender Inclusive Housing is an inclusive living option within VCU residential communities which allows students to live together without regard to gender. Gender Inclusive Housing is a voluntary choice; no student will be assigned to a Gender Inclusive unit unless they have opted to be a part of a Gender Inclusive living space.
To reside within Gender Inclusive Housing units residents must be:
- 18 years of age at the time of the request
- Eligible for university housing
Participants will need to have completed the current Housing Application as well as the Gender Inclusive Housing Supplement.
Gender Inclusive Roommate Groups
Applicants must fill the apartment being requested to full capacity; therefore, assignments will be made from groups of 2, 3, or 4 students. These groups should consist of members who mutually agree to live together. All group members must submit the form in order to be approved for Gender Inclusive Housing.
Gender Inclusive Assignment
There are two ways for residents to choose an apartment in Gender Inclusive Housing:
Any resident(s) seeking to re-sign their current space (where possible) and convert it to Gender Inclusive Housing must have all members seeking to re-sign fill out the Gender Inclusive Housing Supplement and an on-campus Housing Application. In order to convert your current space, you must fill the unit with students who have all applied for Gender Inclusive Housing.
Any residents seeking Gender Inclusive Housing that are participating in room lottery must have all members of their group complete the Gender Inclusive Housing Supplement and a Housing Application and have enough members of the group to fill the apartment.
Gender Inclusive Vacancies
If a vacancy exists in a Gender Inclusive Housing apartment, the following will occur to fill the empty bed:
Residential Life and Housing will allow the remaining residents to identify a new roommate to fill the vacancy. The incoming student must be eligible for on-campus housing and must have completed the appropriate applications. Residential Life and Housing will define the time allocated to find a new roommate. This window of time will vary depending on the time of year and status of the housing waitlist. Typically, a resident will be allowed a minimum of 24 hours, but no more than one week to identify another roommate.
If the remaining residents do not find a new roommate, Residential Life and Housing reserves the right to place another student who has agreed to live in Gender Inclusive Housing.
Residential Life and Housing reserves the right to require the remaining residents to relocate to another room if a space in the existing unit cannot be filled; the current room type is not guaranteed.
Residents are encouraged to communicate to their roommate(s) any plans to change rooms or cancel their housing agreement as soon as possible. The roommate leaving the apartment should help find someone to take their bed space that has completed a Gender Inclusive Housing Supplement and a Housing Application.
